TN abortion amendment could make abortion illegal in rape cases

Tennessee voters will get to weigh in on the issue of abortion for the first time this November. What’s at stake is amendment 1. Voting yes will give Tennessee lawmakers more power to regulate abortion. Voting no will leave the constitution untouched. Amendment 1 supporters say Tennessee has become known as an abortion destination. A growing number of women are seeking abortions in Tennessee because more restrictive laws have led clinics to close in surrounding states. At least one Nashville clinic advertises discounts for out-of-state clients. The Department of Health reports that Tennessee had more than 16,000 abortions in 2011. And Tennessee has seven clinics, more than any other neighboring state, except North Carolina. Opponents say that if the amendment passes, lawmakers could enact mandatory waiting periods for abortions. And there will be efforts to ban all abortion past the first trimester, regardless of the health of the mother, or - cases of rape or incest.
