Arthur Benjamin (1893-1960) was born in Sydney, and received his early musical training in Brisbane after his parents moved there. In 1911 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition under Stanford. During his First World War service in the Royal Flying Corps he had the dubious distinction of having his plane shot down by Hermann Goering. After the war he returned to Australia, but from 1921 he established a performing, conducting and teaching career in London and later Canada. As a pianist he gave the British premiere of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'. As a composer he is best-known for his 'Jamaican Rumba' from 1938, but he wrote operas and other large-scale works, as well as many film scores as well as miniatures.
