One, you want the plant to look healthy. So there shouldn't be excess brown leaves or yellow leaves. And then you want to turn the plant upside down and make sure there aren't a lot of excess roots coming out of the bottom. A couple would be okay but if it's too much that means the plants root bound and it's health may be inhibited a bit. And then lastly, you want to make sure it doesn't have a real long stem, meaning that it's been in the pot too long.
