UC Cancer Institute launches new high-risk clinic for breast cancer

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - One of the next steps in breast cancer care was announced Sunday in the community.

The University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute just launched a new high-risk clinic for breast cancer care. One woman knows how crucial and important clinics like this can be. 

Sarah Steinway got the results from her mammogram and wanted to learn more about her own risks and her sister and children's risks too.

"We started the family discussion at that point in time," Steinway said.

After genetic testing, her children did not appear to be at greater risk but her sister found out that she too carried the gene mutation. 

Steinway's sister consulted with a team run by Dr. Elyse Lower. They recently launched a high-risk clinic for breast cancer. Dr. Lower said while all women are at some risk of getting this disease, "Sometimes we can identify a select group of women that are at a particularly higher risk of getting breast cancer."

The clinic offers options like advanced screening, preventing medications or even breast altering surgery for those at higher risk. For Steinway's sister, advanced screening with an MRI was suggested. 

A small tumor was discovered. The tumor might not have been found so early if Steinway hadn't helped save her sister's life.
