Far too many Social Security disability claimants include physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse as part of their medical histories.  If you have experienced abuse in your background, you know that the pain never really goes away.  You may be able to suppress your memories for years or even decades but there will always be situations where a spoken phrase, a sound, a sight or even a smell may dredge up bad memories.

In my disability law practice I have been stunned to discover how many of my Social Security clients are survivors of physical or sexual abuse.  For many, the abuse occurred during childhood at the hands of a relative or neighbor.  Equally discouraging, I have represented many female veterans of the armed services who were sexually abused by superiors or colleagues while the military culture discouraged reporting and protected the abusers.  And of course there is no shortage of survivors of domestic abuse - which includes physical, sexual and emotional trauma often over many years.

If you have filed for disability based on depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress or other mental health complications arising from past abuse, you have a very legitimate argument to make that the residual impact of your experiences have left you unable to work full time. However, you cannot and should not assume that the administrative law judge assigned to your case will fully understand why your mental health may have taken a turn for the worse after years of functioning normally.
