Phillip Sear plays 'Pain amidst happiness'—the first of a set of three Tonstücke (tone-pieces) by the German composer Jean Vogt (1823–88). It probably comes from the late 1860s/early 1870s. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vogt was a well-travelled German organist and piano teacher who lived variously in St. Petersburg, New York and Berlin. The German Wikipedia article suggests that he was heavily influenced by Mendelssohn, but Schubert and Schumann seem closer models for the Op.120 set. My thumbnail shows a detail from a watercolour by Vasily Sadovnikov of a view of the St. Petersburg Winter Palace from the Admiralty during the reign of Nicholas I who was emperor of Russia during Vogt's time there (early 1850s). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear http://www.psear.co.uk (Email: [email protected] WhatsApp: http://wa.me/441444483794 ) TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@pianogems
