Erlanger Sues Hutcheson: Taxpayers Could Be Involved

A new lawsuit between two hospitals could have Walker and Catoosa county taxpayers caught in the middle. Erlanger is suing Hutcheson Medical Center for 600,000 dollars resulting from an unpaid loan. The two hospitals, Walker and Catoosa counties agreed to the loan about the same time that the hospitals ended their management agreement. If a judge sides with Erlanger, taxpayers in both Walker and Catoosa could be left footing the bill. Hutcheson officials say they haven't paid their loans because damages far exceed Erlanger debt repayment demands. In a statement, they say Erlanger took patients out of North Georgia to its main hospital in Chattanooga, Erlanger failed to address the needs of the citizens, and Hutcheson's debt rose under Erlanger's management. Erlanger's CEO has responded to that statement. He says Erlanger made no money on the management agreement. by Mikaya Thurmond
