MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Mobile Police said Tuesday that 25-year-old Matthew Jamal Blackmon of Mobile is in jail after stealing $45,000 worth of items from Midtown homes in a rash of burglaries over the past several weeks.Police said the community helped lead them straight to Blackmon. A large amount of jewelry, sunglasses, electronics and cash were stolen from 21 homes, according to Mobile Police Chief James Barber.Because of the method of operation and way of entry and the sophistication he had in avoiding burglar alarms, we felt like we were looking for an adult, traveling alone and on foot or bike, said Barber.Once police developed that profile, they shared the information with Midtown residents. On Monday, a woman spotted Blackmon and police arrested him. He's a repeat offender. A career criminal. He's been arrested eight times for burglary. Been convicted four times for burglary but has served a total of six months out of a five year sentence, said Chief Barber. Police did a great job, said Mobile attorney John White, one of the many victims in the string of break-ins.The house was torn apart. Jewelry was gone. It was very disturbing, said White, who ironically was defending a different burglary suspect in Baldwin County the same day his house was broken into.White said the person he was defending was found not guilty. And if you remember the story of Tom Herder, he was the man who claimed he was wrongfully arrested in Midtown when police questioned him two weeks ago about this particular string of burglaries. But police said Herder became belligerent while officers talked to him, and the chief defended his officers' actions. If you've been the victim of a burglary in Mobile over the past few months, contact police to see if any of the items recovered, are yours.
