Phillip Sear plays the third of a set of six 'characteristic pieces' from 1873 by Josef Rheinberger. Liechtenstein's greatest 19th century composer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Liechtenstein's most famous musician, Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901) studied in Munich, and though best known as a composer of organ sonatas, also wrote a fair quantity of piano music (probably as much piano as organ music!). I guess that this beautiful piece is stylistically similar to Brahms' piano works of the period, but there is something about it that is immediately identifiable as being by Rheinberger - probably in the harmonic sequences (I have yet to put my finger on what it is, but there are similarities with other piano works by him that I have played). It is a really beautiful piece that deserves to be better-known.
