This tree was doing OK but I had plenty of the particular variety and wanted to add a new variety of old English cider apple, in this case Broxwood Foxwhelp. Grafting over (otherwise known as top working)is a helpful technique which I have covered in other videos, apologies to anyone who isn't interested but I know a few of you have tried this at home and this is just another little demonstration to show what it should look like. PS the sad specimen of a top worked tree I featured on previous videos is no more, Julia was working with a friend doing some orchard tidying and she hated the look of it so it has been dug out and destroyed. Probably the right decision, it was growing badly due to a severe fungal disease attack and its not like it was a rare variety. Trees which are badly affected by pests and diseases sometimes recover in time but you have to ask yourself whether it is worth it.
