MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) ‚€œ At times Kolton Elliott still struggles to breath. The three-month-old is recovering after coming down with the deadly and dangerous Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

‚“I knew it could be bad, I just didn‚„t know it could be this bad,‚ said Felicia Elliott, Kolton‚„s mother.

Right before Christmas, Felicia Eliott took her son to the pediatrician with cold-like symptoms. Before long, he tested positive for RSV and pneumonia. Her family spent the next month with him in a hospital in Birmingham.

‚“He got what seemed like a cold and it slowly got worst,‚ Elliott said, ‚“I noticed he was having a hard time breathing.‚

Dr. Richard Oyler with Compass Urgent Care said this is peak season for RSV. He said it‚„s very common in children.

‚“It looks like any other cold coming on, but it generally progresses,‚ Oyler said, ‚“they‚„ll have a little bit of a fever and they‚„re breathing pretty fast and often have wheezing.‚

In most children, Oyler said, the virus will cause only mild symptoms. But for premature babies and children with underlying symptoms there‚„s a greater risk. Shortly after Kolton tested positive for RSV, doctors discovered he had a heart condition. For him RSV was life-threatening and now his parents worry what will happen next. Kolton is scheduled to undergo surgery for his heart condition in the next month, his little body still recovering from the virus.

‚“All you can do is look at him and pray, because you‚„re helpless,‚ Felicia Elliott said.

The Elliott‚„s have a GoFund Me account set up for Kolton‚„s medical expenses. For more information, click here.
