Brenda Russell first entered my radius in the dying days of 1979 when her beautiful 'So Good So Right' was a minor hit on American Top 40 and I sat up and took notice of this sweet sounding songstress. A decade went by before I rediscovered Brenda Russell and her 'Get Here' LP. I have been a devotee since and for nearly 40 years her tones and poetry (she is one of the best American songwriters imho) have been among my favourites (#7). I have chosen her 2000 track 'Walking In New York' from one of my all time favourite albums 'Paris Rain' which came along at just the right time for me. Much of her music is all about maters of the heart and even in her most upbeat tracks, there is always a lyrical style that reveals a warm and romantic artist. Brenda also easily traverses pop, R&B, soul, funk and jazz. Best known for her Grammy nominated hit 'Piano In The Dark', I have countless Brenda Russell recordings in my vast collection and they are all among my most treasured possessions, as it is quite possible I might have never discovered her, and my life would have been far poorer if that had occurred. She is a being of pure beauty.
