Police: Fatal Wreck at Wendy's 'Freak Accident'

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A fatal crash on Schillinger Road leaves a lot of questions, one woman dead and witnesses stunned by what they saw.We're still investigating why this vehicle actually left the roadway, said Mobile Police Department Spokesperson Ashley Rains.According to Rains, around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, a pickup truck heading northbound on Schillinger Road veered off the roadway. Before stopping, it struck a vehicle in the Wendy's parking lot, killing 66-year-old Martha Hinton, a former Loxley Elementary School teacher, inside. Patrick Keelen was just feet away.It was loud, he said, I heard it all the way from here at the corner. The lady was backing out and came on kind of at full speed and just ran into the vehicle.Keelen sells doughnuts at the busy corner of Airport and Schillinger Roads daily. After what he witnessed on Wednesday, he's worried about safety.It should be a wake up call for everybody out here you know, he said, they need to learn how to slow down.Police say the driver in the pickup truck was a 59-year-old man. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injures. Rains said they are still investigating what caused the driver to run off the road.
