A video about perhaps the nicest of our earliest apples, Baker's Delicious. I know very little about this rare variety, I bought one tree on the basis of a short description of it in Lawrence Hills' book 'The Good Fruit Guide'. The original tree was a bit sickly, grew slowly and took a long time to fruit. When we finally got some apples they were great and I grafted on to an old Bramley tree, now we have a decent crop (about 15 kg) which I took to market and they sold out uickly.

Like all early apples, it needs to be eaten within a week or 10 days of picking or else it goes soft, or 'fondant' as I prefer to say. This is something that happens with all early apples, and is not to be confused with the 'mushy' texture that appleds develop when they break down afger being taken out of long term cold storage. The flavour, juice and sweetness are all there. we need to get over our idea that all good apples are always very crisp.

Anyhow, Baker's Delicious is a very rare variety that should not be forgotten. Its attractive with a good flavour, although like all early maturing apples it will not keep. If you only have room for one apple in your garden this would not be a good choice, but if you have room for 3 or more this is certainly a contender for your early ripening apple. I have made this point before, and its obvious when you think about it, but if you can plant 3 or more apple trees you do not want them all to ripen at the same time. 1 early, 1 mid season, 1 late keeper is wise.

I will be sending out some scion wood in February 2014 God willing, do think about this. Its a much tastier apple that Beauty of Bath or Discovery.
