MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Students at the University of South Alabama honored Martin Luther King, Jr. by helping others in the community. Hundreds of volunteers took part in numerous building, art and cleaning projects, including a Habitat for Humanity build on Skipper Drive in Mobile. Amidst the hammering and repairs a special friendship formed between USA freshman Sydney Spradlin and 11-year-old Timarcus James, who lives in the home being remodeled and repaired. Not only did James mingle with the big kids on Monday, he got to watch and participate in his own home's transformation. I was really looking forward to helping the college students because I woke up at two in the morning getting ready to work with them, then went back to sleep and woke up at six to see if they were already here because I really wanted to help, said James. USA students gave up their holiday to scrape away loose paint, remove rotten siding and repair the front porch of this family's home. It's making my mom feel good because she always wanted her house to be blue so this is the first chance she can do it, said James. When you do things for other people you don't always see where it goes so it's been cool to get to know him in a personal way and see how it's going to help him in his future where he's going to have a window where cold air isn't coming in. He's going to have a house his moms has always dreamed of so it's an awesome opportunity to build a relationship with somebody who you‚„re helping and not just doing the action, said USA student and volunteer Sydney Spradlin. Habitat for Humanity will continue working on the house for the next four days, then subcontractors will come in and make repairs to the roof and windows.
