I love the idea inherent to this great and original song by Canadian superstar Serena Ryder. 'Christmas Kisses' is the title track from her first foray into not only seasonal music but also a jazzier sphere. That said her version of the Etta James classic 'At Last' is quite spine tingling and is one of her earliest recordings from 2005 and shows an artist already with a great range both vocally and musically; genre wise. Serena Ryder has been one of my most treasured artists for nearly 12 years. I stumbled across her 2006 set 'If your memory serves you well' having never heard of her at that time. I was curious about the concept of this young Canadian paying tribute to her fellow countrymen and exploring some of their better known songs. It showed a great respect but also an artist of distinction and in the decade or so since, my love and support of her music has only multiplied as Serena has issued several albums and itinerant tracks as collaborations or soundtrack recordings. For every decade I have been a pop music devotee (5 decades!!!) there have been women who have stolen my heart and my hard earned cash and in so doing become all time favourites. For the 1970's it was Olivia, Suzi, Linda, Donna (they are all so famous I need not use surnames ) In the 1980's when I was going through my worst growing pains and young adulthood it was Melissa Manchester, Dionne Warwick, Jennifer Warnes, Laura Branigan, Natalie Cole, Nicolette Larson, Chaka Khan and Juice Newton. In the 1990's as I found a career but lost my way in matters of the heart, I relied upon Brenda Russell, Lisa Stansfield, Julia Fordham, Trisha Yearwood, Shawn Colvin and Joan Osborne. In the 00's it was a lot of the singers aforementioned as well as Eddi Reader and this uber talented Serena Ryder. As this decade comes to an end in the not too distant future, I reflect on the diversity of singers such as Caro Emerald, Rumer, Gin Wigmore, Imelda May and Ingrid Michaelson that have helped me through the most diabolical period in my life thus far: since 2008 when several wheels began to fall of and indeed rolled down the hill without me! Without the music and the spirit of these incredible singers, I may not have survived it. Honestly. All of this adds up to a picture of an enormous affection and appreciation for the tones and sensibilities of a panoply of styles and genres in the women I have had in my musical treasure trove. Pop music will be with me until the day I die and I know will continue to be a lifeline. Singers from the past, the present and indeed the future will nourish and guide me through. Some of the above mentioned singers are no longer alive, some have retired, some are still hitting their peak. I love the overview of their careers, as I age and my lifetime and its dots are joined from year to year. 'Christmas Kisses' means something to me, in that it is about the real and the important things in life - love, affection, respect, kindness and truth. Seasons' Greeting to all the regular visitors to my channel. The emails I get every day, show how much the music means to people all over the globe. Thanks for clicking on.....
