Police Look For Cop Impersonator, Murder Victi

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Mobile Police said they're looking for a police impersonator who handcuffed, shot and killed a man on Theodore Dawes Road at the I-10 overpass. It happened just after 2 a.m. Friday.

Police have recovered the suspect's car. They found a White Crown Victoria abandoned in the woods late Friday morning. They're still looking for the man they believe killed 29-year-old David Kyles. 

Police believe a man dressed in all black, wearing a hood or ski mask was driving the Crown Victoria Friday morning when he pulled David Kyles over somewhere in the Theodore area. Police said Kyles was taken from there. He was later found dead on the side of Theodore Dawes Road near I-10, wearing handcuffs. 

"He was last known to be leaving area of Tillman's Corner Theodore area and was talking to his girlfriend on the telephone. About 15 minutes later he indicated he was being stopped by law enforcement, which is again another indication that we have some type of imposter out there," said Chief James Barber. 

Police said the suspect's car was equipped with blue LED lights and a post mount spotlight, similar to what you would see on a real police car. 

"It is a vehicle last known to be registered out of Florida. The tag, the police tag was actually a Mobile PD tag reported stolen this morning. And there is equipment in there that indicates police raid vests," said Barber. 

Barber couldn't say whether the crime was random. But Kyles' cousin, Jason Bruner, is convinced it wasn‚„t.

"The people that did this. They knew my cousin. They knew who he was so they followed him and set him up to hurt him," said Bruner. 

Bruner said his cousin leaves behind a large family, including four children. 

"My cousin was a good man. A good father. Helped his mother out. Looked after his sister. He was the big brother even though he was the little brother and we all love him and are all going to miss him," said Bruner. 

Police haven't released a motive in this case. And say they aren't ruling out the possibility that there's more than one suspect. 

They are still searching for the victim's vehicle which is a black 2002 Honda Accord. The vehicle's tag number is 2AT7771. If you see the vehicle call (251) 208-7000.
