Local 15 continues to make spirits bright this holiday season as local charities team up with those in need. For nearly 150 years, Wilmer Hall Children's Home in Mobile has provided shelter, food, warmth and a feeling of family for thousands of children. This year, Trax Tires is playing Santa to kids who have been through so much. Our mission is to provide a home for them. A home where they are loved, supported and surrounded by people who will give them that network of support, said Sally Greene, Executive Director at Wilmer Hall.Wilmer Hall was founded in 1864 by Bishop Wilmer for those orphaned during the war or yellow fever. It was originally in Tuscaloosa, then moved to Spring Hill in the early 1900's.Most of our children and young adults that live here are victims of poverty, abuse neglect, and homelessness. They have experienced some very difficult times, Greene added. We have four outstanding programs here, our residential living, our transitional living, our transitional family program for women and children and then we have an outstanding education program.Greene took Local 15's Kelly Jones on a tour of the sprawling campus where kids as young as 6 months up to 25 have needs and wishes to feel like they are home. Trax Tires Auto Center were given that wish list and says they were up for the challenge. One by one, the Trax Tires team unloaded household essentials, pillows, sheets, blankets, blender, and put them under the tree. What's important in our community is important to us at Trax Tires. We want to see these guys have something for Christmas, just like everyone else, said Woody Callaghan. The cottages the kids call home will utilize every gift throughout the living room, the kitchen and the bedroom. Wilmer Hall is so grateful for the donations inside the cottages, as they continue to renovate. The needs extend to the outdoors, and to a place kids can play and have fun.If somebody that knows about building a playground would step up and help us do it, I am a little bit lost as to how to plan it and then execute that plan, Greene added.Donations are accepted at Wilmer Hall Children's Home year round.
