Parent of Runaway Teen Arrested for Child Abus

UPDATE 11/10: Mobile Police say the arrest of Marcus Bellard Sr. is linked to his 14-year-old son who ran away from the 1300 block of Ridge Street Friday.

The teen told authorities he ran away due to physical abuse by his father. Officers observed injuries on Marcus Bellard Jr. consistent with abuse. The Department of Human Resources was notified and is investigating.

Bellard Jr. and his two sisters were released to a family member.

Bellard Sr. is charged with willful abuse of a child. Additional charges are pending.

Marcus Bellard wife's Angel Bellard, released the following statement on her husband's arrest:

"On behalf of my husband, he did not abuse or neglect any of my children. My son is the type who is disobedient, rebellious. He's been a troubled child for a while. We reached out for help and tried to love and guide him in the right path, but just wants to do what he wants to do. We have rules and my son did not want to abide by them. We do spank our children, but it's not abuse. We love our children and our son didn't want to abide by our rules, but it was not abuse. My husband loves his kids and have always provided for them and he's a loving father and would not put them in harms way."

MOBILE, Ala.(WPMI) The father of a 14-year-old who ran away was arrested by Mobile police following the teens return home.

Marcus Bellard is charged with one count of Willful Abuse of a Child Under the Age of 18. He was arrested on Saturday and released from jail Saturday evening.

On Friday, Bellards son ran away from his home in the Dauphin Island Parkway area after an argument with his family. His family told Local 15 News he returned home safe and sound Friday night. His father, Marcus Bellard, now charged with child abuse, talked to Local 15 during the search for his son.

"He ran away this morning trying to avoid his punishment. But this afternoon we need him to come home we really care about him we love him we pray to God he's safe, Bellard said,Reporter: Could you take that argument back now if you could?

Oh yea. Most definitely. It's not that serious. Come to find out he was telling the truth," Bellard said.

Local 15s Jasmine Williams uncovered the latest development in this case. Terrence Perkins with the Mobile Police Department says this investigation is ongoing and would not say who the alleged victim in the case is or if Bellards charged is linked to his son at all.
