MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A tow truck driver escaped death by inches Thursday highlighting the dangers of melting ice from the historic winter storm that blanketed lower Alabama.The towman had been working a crash along Interstate 10 near Virginia Street around 8 a.m.As he was securing one vehicle to his wrecker, he looked up just in time to see another SUV barreling out of control toward him. The SUV slammed into his wrecker less than a foot from the towman.The driver didn't have enough response time and hit that slick ice out on the interstate and just couldn't stop in time, Alabama Department of Transportation Spokesperson Matt Eckersen said. Mobile Police say the driver of the SUV hit an ice patch before slamming in to the tow truck. They say there was no violation, so no citation will be given.While sunlight Thursday morning melted much of what covered the ground in previous days, patches of black ice remained in many parts of the area.A lot of the traveling public will get a false sense of security, they'll see a wet road, black pavement, and will drive over it and hit an icy bridge, Eckersen said, It's been causing a lot of wrecks.In other parts of town, drivers were still tempting danger. One woman cleared just enough snow from her vehicle to see in one direction, leaving the rest of her windows obscured by snow.For others, speed taught tough lessons.Transportation officials stressed the best route to safety was slow.
