BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WPMI) The man accused of murdering his stepfather and then dismembering the body will remain in the Baldwin County jail on a $1 million bond. Thursday we learned more on why William Minton may have done what prosecutors say he did. It was his first time in court since he was arrested two months ago. "Unfortunately after doing this for so many years a lot of it doesn't surprise you. The depths people will sink to," said Baldwin County District Attorney Hallie Dixon. Everyone was surprised when body parts started coming up. Then what appeared to be a house of horrors was discovered at 87-year-old Kenneth Hood's home. It's there where investigators say Minton killed and then dismembered Hood's body. His attorney says Minton was protecting his mother. "The question we kept asking today was what evidence is there that he intended to kill this man," said Minton's defense attorney Jim Sweet. Thursday's testimony revealed that Minton told investigators that he struck his stepfather over the head with a dumb bell bar. A blow prosecutors say killed the 87-year-old. Minton had apparently walked in on an argument between his mother and step father over money. Minton told investigators Hood had threatened to kill his mother if she gave any more of his money away. "Saying that you killed someone isn't saying that you killed them intentionally," said Sweet. Prosecutors say Hood had grown tired of other people, mainly relatives, taking advantage of his money and his generosity. "The fact that this man spent his life supporting this woman and because he loved her supporting these children who just took advantage and stole and eventually killed him, it just makes me sick. It's just a terrible thing that after all those years his reward is getting beaten to death over the head and chopped up, " said Dixon. Testimony also revealed Minton never admitted to dismembering the body. The D.A. says charging Minton with capital murder is still a possibility. The case will now go before a grand jury.
