LOXLEY, Ala. (WPMI) Baldwin County schools will be closed Tuesday because of the cold weather. The superintendent says the last thing he wants is to see a child waiting at a bus stop to be exposed to possible single digit temperatures.Six a.m. tomorrow morning it's forecasted we will have a one degree wind chill, and at 7 o'clock a three degree windchill, said Superintendent Dr. Alan Lee. Student access to warm clothing is clearly a worry and the wait time at some rural bus stops along with long bus rides could lead to problems.Mine are car riders so they are not riding the bus, but I didn't even think about that. That makes a lot of sense to me for them to be standing out in cold especially in the morning it's really really cold, said parent Kayla Wallace.This whole decision is made based on the concept that we don't want to take a chance of children being injured with wind chill, said Lee.Bus drivers like James Aiken agree, some kids just aren't prepared for brutal temperatures and there could be mechanical problems too.Sometimes the humidity in the brake lines sometimes makes it harder to get the bus going. So safety concerns also the kids with some parents working two jobs may be out early and the kids are at the bus stop even 10 or 15 minutes out in the cold would be a harmful and a bad start to any child's day so, said Aiken.School transportation officials worry diesel fuel could freeze or gel up which could cause break downs. Students and parents need know all athletic activities have been cancelled tomorrow as well.Students will make up the day on Friday January 10 and on March 14 which were originally scheduled as half days.CLICK HERE for more information on school schedule changes.
