MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Hundreds of people from across the community marched in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday Monday. The 25th Annual Martin Luther King Mobile March was organized by the People United to Advance the Dream. People from all walks of life reflected on the life and legacy of the late civil rights leader as they walked from Bishop State Community College to Lyons Park. Billy Johnson attended Alabama State University during the Civil Rights era years ago. He witnessed rallies far different from the peaceful march he and his grandson were able to enjoy together on this brisk winter day. "I was up there when they had the boycott. When Rosa Parks got on the bus and they-we had a boycott and we couldn't ride the bus. We had to catch what was called 'Jettys,'" said Johnson. He remembers the days of separate restrooms, restaurants and schools. "I remember here in Mobile we also had bombings. A bombing not very far from here on LaFayette Street. We all heard that.," Johnson said. Billy now has a 12-year-old grandson and hopes 60 years from now, his grandson will be right where he is-encouraging others to make a difference. He said one way to do that is utilizing the right to vote, one of the rights Dr. King and others fought so hard for. "We're trying to make progress, but we need to still get out and vote and become a part of the society that makes good decisions," said Johnson. King's birthday is January 15.
