MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) ‚"Laura Baxley describes herself as a typical college student.  But this past week, her life changed, as she went from studying in school to searching for the driver in her father's in hit-and-run death.

"He was the best dad," she said, "he really was".

Jerry Baxley was hit by a truck while walking in the 2400 block of McVay Drive Wednesday around 8PM, the driver didn't stop. Witnesses reported seeing a red Ford truck leave the scene of the accident, according to police. The  57-year-old was taken to the hospital with several broken bones and bleeding on his brain. He died Friday.

"Nobody expected this to happen and for him to go so tragically," Laura Baxley said.

Laura  is set to graduate from college in July and is planning to get married in a year. She always imagined her father walking her down the aisle, a dream shattered by that driver.

"I remember when the doctors came in a told us he wasn't going to make it," she said, "it was just really devastating and heartbreaking".

Leon King was one of Jerry's best friends and said he's been hit by a car in the same area of McVay Drive.

"People just don't care, they drive to fast," King said.

Residents in the area say speeding cars and lack of sidewalks have been causing problems along the roadway for years. With no arrests in the latest mystery of McVay, those close to Jerry Baxley promise to search for answers.

 "I know finding the driver won't bring my dad back," Laura Baxley said, "but it would bring us some closure. We would love for the person who did it to be found."
