Phillip Sear plays a piano transcription by Alexandre Dubuque of one of the best-known songs - An evening song (вечеръ) - by the Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko.

Moniuszko (1819-72) was born near Minsk to a Polish family, and is today revered both in Poland (as a father of Polish National opera) and Belarus - the present country of his birth. He was active throughout eastern Europe, Russia and the Baltic states as composer, teacher and conductor. Amongst his works were well over 200 songs, but they don't seem to be widely sung other than by native Polish speakers. This one is a setting of words by the Belarussian poet Władysław Syrokomla (1823-62), and there are several versions of the song (as sung) here on YouTube. The arranger, Alexandre Dubuque ( Александр Иванович Дюбюк, (1812-98), is a far less familiar figure than Moniuszko. A Russian pianist, composer and teacher, he was born and died in Moscow, a piano student of John Field (of whom he published a memoir), and later a teacher of Balakirev. He was one of the first teachers at the Moscow Conservatoire. He was active in other spheres besides piano playing: he married three times and fathered 16 children (four less than JS Bach). As a composer he was well-known for his own romances (sung, inter alia, by Chaliapin), and also published many song transcriptions for piano, including no less than 40 of Schubert's. The thumbnail shows a statue of Moniuszko in Toruń, Poland.
