Phillip Sear plays a charming 1880 polka-mazurka by the Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu (1853-83). -------------------------------------- Although apparently little-known internationally, Porumbescu is still a big name in Romania and Moldova, and the Baladǎ, also from 1880 is his best-known work, with the eloquent melancholy of its solo violin part. Actually, most of Porumbescu's music was choral and operetta - including the Albanian national anthem. He studied for a time in Vienna with Bruckner and completed some 250 works in his short life.
