MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Mobile County commissioners are reporting a nearly $2 million surplus in 2013. They say the money could mean bonuses for employees. But District Attorney Ashley Rich is angry that commissioners are bragging about extra money.Ashley Rich emailed a letter to commissioners on Thursday, saying the District Attorney's Office has five unfilled prosecutor positions, and her efforts to get help from the commission recently have fallen on deaf ears. Mobile County commissioners say county employees should benefit from last year's $1.9 million budget surplus. It's our recommendation that we take a portion and put it toward the first premium payment for our employees on our new health insurance plan. We're exiting one and entering the next program so there will actually be two payments due in the month so certainly it wasn't fair to ask our employees pay both of those, said Commissioner Connie Hudson. They're also proposing that employees each receive $500 bonuses to help with additional deductibles. Following this we will be in the local government's health insurance plan and that's anticipated in the long run to save us every year. Potentially this first year as much as $2 million we hope, said Hudson. After hearing that the commission reported a nearly $2 million surplus, Ashley Rich fired off an email saying that her office has been told time and time again that commissioners can't help and aren't required to help her office with their needs. She went on to say that funding public safety and supporting the efforts of the D.A.'s Office should be a priority. Commissioners are also proposing giving $350,000 dollars to the Sheriff's Office for rising costs at the jail.A vote on the proposed bonuses will take place at Monday's meeting.CLICK HERE for more information on the proposed bonuses.
