MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) For months, parents and students who call Florence Howard Elementary their school worried it soon would belong to someone else- the students of Mobile County's Math and Science Magnet School.But not anymore.On Friday, the student body of another school inherited that decision. What school?Eichold-Mertz Elementary on Government Boulevard. Students here now must successfully apply to walk these halls next year, or go to another local elementary school. Some parents like it, some don't.Yes, said one father, because it would be closer to home.But one mom said, no.My job, she said, the way me and my husband's schedule is, it just wouldn't work.But next door. at Uniforms R Us, Valerie Martin was hearing about it, too, and she likes it.And she doesn't.She doesn't like it because she has a daughter who is a student at Eichold-Mertz.Well, kids are familiar with the school, said Martin. Some of them have been there from kindergarten all the way up. So they're familiar with the teachers, the principals. It's a big shakeup for the community.But Valerie likes it because she owns this uniform shop, and a new school means new uniforms.New plaid! she sxclaimed. New color scheme! Yes, screen printing, monogramming. Yes, it is opportunity for me.But then she paused to reflect.I love Mertz, she said quietly. It was next door, it was convenient, I love the principal, the teachers, everybody there at that local school!Parents are invited to meet with school officials at the school next Wednesday at 6 pm to discuss the changes.
