Talking Trash: Pesky Signs Are Litter

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) College student and Navy retiree Frank Nunamaker looked at the trash littering the ground at a nearby shopping center and was not happy at all.

"No. It eventually winds up in the drainage ditches, which drain off into the rivers and local waterways," he said.

But there is another form of litter invading Mobile. Actually, it's already taken root. Temporary signs, political signs, those push in signs, even with good intentions they trash up a neighborhood. When it comes to political signs, Richard Olsen with the city of Mobile, says they have a limited legal life span.

"Soon as you announce and qualify, you can start placing your politcal signs out," said Olsen, "but they are to be removed within seven days of the election."

And after that, they are officially declared litter and they, by law, must be removed. And never are they permitted along city right of way. Right of way includes any median, or between the sidewalk and the street.Same goes for those advertisements called "push in" signs. They are everywhere and almost always... illegal... litter... trash. 

"If it exceeds the number of free standing signs and you don't have a permit for it," Olsen said, "it shouldn't be there."

And if you think you're scoring points with the consumer, you might want to rethink that! When asked if he'd shop with a business that lines the street with those little lawn signs, Nunamaker replied, "not really!"
