MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A woman narrowly escaped her burning home Wednesday morning, thanks to the quick action of her neighbors. Several neighbors say she didn't know her house was up in flames until they kicked her door in. "I just heard a frantic call. She was trapped in the house," said her godson, John Boyd. It could have been a much different outcome for Kim, the resident of the house that caught fire on Dublin Street. She was inside her home, unaware it was burning down around her. "Flames were coming from that top layer right there," said Joseph Berryhill as he points to the roof of the yellow house singed with smoke. Seeing the flames, neighbors began beating on Kim's door. They got no answer, so they took matters into their own hands. "So I told JoJo to kick the door down," said Shirley James, Kim's neighbor. "And I kicked the door open, and by that time she was coming towards the door," described Joseph Berryhill. Berryhill said the fire was so intense a propane tank exploded. Neighbors managed to get Kim out safely. Charred remnants of her belongings are all that remain. "It was burning, it was consumed and she didn't know it, you know, Kim was just in the house, so if it hadn't been for him, just acting quick, we would have had a real tragedy today, but Thank God," said Boyd. "That makes me feel real good, to help my neighbor, to save my neighbor, because she didn't know what was going on. She didn't know nothing," said James. Mobile Fire-Rescue officials tell Local 15 News the fire caused $20,000 in damage to the home. Spokesperson Steve Huffman said the fire appears to be accidental and electrical in nature.
