FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) Plans are already drawn out and ground will soon be broken for a new fire station that will serve the north part of Fairhope.

This station has been a few years in the works, and will be the first time in over a decade that the Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department will be expanding.

"The first station came in above budget, and we went back to the drawing board a few years later, and this is where we are at now," said Chris Ellis, chief of the volunteer fire department.

The station will be built right off of Highway 98 and Parker Road, behind Publix. The cost is upwards of $500,000. That is being borrowed through a loan.

"We will be paying it back with an ad valorem tax that Baldwin fire departments get," explained Ellis.

If all goes according to plan, the station will be up and running by late summer of 2015 and it will be staffed by a couple of volunteers.

This brings good news for everyone in the area, not only because of faster response times, but also because it will allow the fire department to keep its current ISO (Insurance Office Rating Score).

This score is used to determine home insurance costs. Currently, Fairhope is receiving a 4 on a 1 out of 10 scale.

Fairhope residents that are wanting to help out their volunteer fire department are encouraged to do so through the annual fund drive, which will be happening in late January.
