Rebikov (1866-1920) conceived the Mélomimique as a new art-form, blending music with pantomime (although not intended to be physically moved to), and he wrote several sets around 1900. Of the five pieces in the set, this is perhaps the best known, and most modernistic. Given the similarity of the middle section to part of the 'Sacre du Printemps' - written 15 years later - Stravinsky certainly seems to have known it!. Rebikov provides the following scenario (my translation): "The demons are silent and motionless. They amuse themselves by watching Satan's daughter dance." In a footnote to the piece, Rebikov specifies that in any visual enactment of this piece, the demons should resemble an 1890 painting of Lucifer by the German symbolist painter Franz von Stuck ( http://bit.ly/1yabUon ).
