FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) It's the second day of shooting for yet another big Hollywood movie being filmed here on the Gulf Coast. This film, titled Somnia, is estimated to generate $30 million in direct spending locally and statewide. It hasn't always been this way but now filmmakers are coming here to get the most for their money.A few years ago the state of Alabama passed the incentive legislation allowing people like me to come home. Luring other people in to make movies here too so that's a good thing, said Executive Producer Scott Lumpkin.Lumpkin has been around sets for year now. The Fairhope native says filming in Alabama has now become attractive again. It's a 25 percent rebate on all of our spend in the state and a 35 percent rebate on hiring in state labor. So the goal is to rebuild the infrastructure for the crew that's here so that other movies will come and utilize everybody that works in the business, said Lumpkin. You may recall recent shoots like the film Tokarev starring Nicholas Cage, mostly shot in Downtown Mobile. On the second day of shooting it was a closed set today for Somnia. The film stars actors Thomas Jane and Kate Bosworth. It's story of a young couple who take in a foster child who has a unique ability to project his dreams into their reality. So it's a supernatural sort of cerebral thriller, said Lumpkin. In order to qualify for all the state incentives Lumpkin says he has to make sure everything used in the film is bought in Alabama. The wardrobe, anything, even the stars in the film sign contracts through a state talent rep. They will pay taxes in Alabama too.
